Ole Miss coach Nutt interested in KU job, has talked with Perkins

Ole Miss football coach Houston Nutt is interested in the open Kansas job, Arkansas radio station KABZ-FM reported today, and The Star has learned that Nutt is on KU athletic director Lew Perkins’ list and that Perkins and Nutt have talked about the job.

Nutt, 52, would be a big fish hire for Kansas. In 10 years at Arkansas and two at Ole Miss, Nutt compiled an overall record of 92-56 and an SEC record of 51-45. He has been selected SEC coach of the year three times (2001, 2006 and 2008). Nutt has taken the Rebels to back-to-back Cotton Bowl berths. He is well-compensated, making a salary of $2.5 million (former KU coach Mark Mangino made $2.3).

If Kansas and Nutt agree on a deal, Nutt would join KU basketball coach Bill Self as an Oklahoma State alum leading the Jayhawks. Nutt played quarterback for the Cowboys from 1979-81.

Perkins is reportedly in New York to talk with Buffalo coach Turner Gill about the KU job. Perkins was expected to be at the National Football Foundation’s annual awards luncheon on Tuesday.
