Spread QBs adjust to playing under center
I was taken aback last month at the SEC spring meetings in Destin, Fla., to hear Arkansas coach Bobby Petrino discuss one of his quarterbacks. Petrino raved about Wilson’s skills but talked candidly about his difficulties doing a very basic thing for QBs: Play from under center.
It’s not just Wilson. The proliferation of spread offenses run predominantly out of the shotgun means some quarterbacks must be later trained on basic fundamentals from under center, as I wrote about today in The Birmingham News.
The spread offense — a wide-ranging term that encompasses many different styles — started becoming popular in college football about 10 years ago, and it’s continued to grow. Urban Meyer proved at Florida you can win big with it.
