BATON ROUGE — Most of the numbers surrounding the 2008 LSU football season tell a sad story.
There is the decade-worst 7-5 overall record and 3-5 mark in the Southeastern Conference after entering the season at No. 6 and rising as high as No. 2. There are the lowly defensive rankings — 12th in the 12-team SEC in pass defense and No. 81 nationally, No. 11 in the SEC and No. 66 nationally in points allowed and No. 9 in the SEC in total defense — after domination of those categories throughout the decade.
But LSU is No. 1 in the nation in that category that pre-judges all future numbers – recruiting. The Tigers have the No. 1 recruiting class in the nation, according to Rivals.com, heading into signing day in less than two months.
Here are the top six:
1. LSU with 20 commitments, 3 five-star prospects, 11 four stars (2003, 2007 national champions).
2. USC with 16 commitments, 4 five stars, 11 four stars (2003, 2004 national champions).
3. Ohio State with 24 commitments, 1 five star, 15 four stars (2002 national champions).
4. Texas with 19 commitments, 2 five stars, 12 four stars (2005 national champions).
5. North Carolina with 24 commitments, 1 five star, 12 four stars.
6. Alabama with 19 commitments, 2 five stars, 9 four stars.
