Fulmer had let his guard down

Fulmer had let his guard down

This particular lunch was a couple of summers ago, a chance for the guy who coaches for a living to compare notes with the guy who critiques coaches for a living.
Among other things, Phillip Fulmer and I reflected on football, families and future plans. He talked about fishing and spending time in the mountains. I talked about golf and sitting on the beach.
“We’ve both been doing what we do for an awful long time,” he said. “Do you ever think it’s time to do something else?”
In that moment, I couldn’t help but wonder if Fulmer was hinting at something. His guard was down, which was unusual. Was he really thinking about life after football?
So I asked him if he might consider leaving the sideline and hanging up his whistle sooner rather than later.
