In Title Quest, SEC May Be Too Good for Own Good
TEMPE, Ariz. — As he stood on the podium after Georgia’s 27-10 victory at Arizona State on Saturday night, Coach Mark Richt had a patch of ink on his right hand.
He had scribbled parts of his pregame and halftime speech on his palms, and in the 99-degree night, the words had sweated into an inky blur.
“It’s my palm pilot,” Richt said.
With the college football season a third of the way through, the chances for Richt and his counterparts in the Southeastern Conference to reach the Bowl Championship Series title game seem just as muddled.
While the SEC once more appears to have separated itself as the nation’s top conference, it would not send a team to the title game if the season ended today. That means that the SEC may need a dollop of serendipity, yet again, to get a shot at the national title.
