Game aims to be `Daytona 500 of college football’
The Alabama-Clemson game Saturday in Atlanta signifies more than a season opener. It also marks the debut of the Chick-fil-A College Kickoff, which envisions becoming “the Daytona 500 of college football.”
Gary Stokan, president of the Atlanta Sports Council and Chick-fil-A Bowl, has fueled the hype even further.
“If we had played a doubleheader, we could have sold both games out,” Stokan said. “I think it’s the toughest ticket maybe the Georgia Dome has ever had – and that’s saying a lot.”
That’s a bold statement considering the Georgia Dome has held the Super Bowl, Olympic events and SEC football championship games. Stokan supports his claim by citing the absence of public ticket sales for Alabama-Clemson.
This much is certain: By choosing two rabid fan bases within driving distance, the Chick-fil-A College Kickoff positioned itself for a successful start to what could be an annual event.
StubHub.com reports Alabama-Clemson is the second-best selling ticket this season, behind only Ohio State-Southern Cal.
