Hey, coach: open your eyes, close your doors
Tommy Tuberville did some things the past two Saturdays that were not unprecedented but, taken in their totality, were totally out of sync with his media-friendly reputation.
He closed Auburn’s first two scrimmages of fall camp to the press and the general public, although Saturday’s event was open to scholarship donors and Jordan-Hare Stadium suite-holders.
To football coaches, the meaning of “open” and “closed” is open for interpretation. Usually for a price.
Tuberville didn’t release the statistics from either scrimmage. Nor did he allow offensive coordinator Tony Franklin or defensive coordinator Paul Rhoads to meet the press afterward.
This is the third straight year the Auburn coach has used some of these stricter security measures in the preseason.
In other words, Tuberville has been acting more like Nick Saban than Saban himself. At least the Alabama coach released the stats from both of his team’s scrimmages this month.
