Thompson joins other pushing to remove Confederate statues from U.S. Capitol
Rep. Bennie Thompson, a Democrat from Mississippi, said for him and other members of the black caucus it’s hard to understand how people pay homage to statues and symbols honoring people “who fought a war to keep people in slavery.’’
“It’s really not only an insult to people like myself who still live here in the South, but to anybody who understands history and the fact that the South lost,” said Thompson, who pushed to remove state flags featuring the Confederate emblem from the House side of the Capitol. “Losers tend to be relegated to a museum not a hero status.”
