Congressman Thompson to Boston Herald Radio: Briefings say hacking US election possible

By: Magnolia Tribune - September 8, 2016

House member: Election hacking is a possibility

The ranking Democrat on the House Homeland Security Committee said it is possible for a foreign entity to hack U.S. elections this fall, something that could have “catastrophic” effects on the American democracy if the threat were to come to fruition.

“The briefings I have been privy to indicate (hacking an election) is possible, but highly unlikely,” Mississippi U.S. Rep. Bennie Thompson told Herald Radio. “The reason we say that is that all our systems are tied into different states, but who can predict two months from now what will go on?

“If in fact we are hacked from an election standpoint, the potential impact could be catastrophic in terms of a foreign power really participating in helping elect the next president of the United States,” Thompson warned. “I think for a democracy like we are, this would just be the end to all ends.”
