“It’s up in the air as to the committee assignments,” state Sen. David Parker, R-Olive Branch, said. Parker, an optometrist, said he prefers to be on committees in which he has expertise, such as healthcare. “Hopefully, we’ll get to the work that we are all committed to doing.”

Sen. Kevin Blackwell, R-Olive Branch, agreed. “It would be nice to be actually working on something,” Blackwell said. “We are meeting a lot of new people, which is important. There are a number of folks interested in filing bills but we would like to know what the committee makeup will be.”

Blackwell has his eye on a few choice committee assignments.

“I did express an interest with over 40 years in healthcare to be on the Public Health and Welfare Committee, and I also listed Appropriations, Economic Development, Energy, Transportation and Insurance as committees on which to serve.”
