Is Singing River Health System financial department shredding documents?

By: Magnolia Tribune - January 10, 2015

Attorneys: SRHS shredding documents; SRHS: ‘Absurd and outrageous’

Two attorneys representing plaintiffs in lawsuits against Singing River Health System delivered a “cease and desist” letter to the hospital Friday after learning of allegations the SRHS financial department was shredding documents.

The county-owned hospital system called the accusation “absurd and outrageous … clearly designed as a staged event by plaintiff’s attorneys.”

Attorneys Harvey Barton and Earl Denham drafted the letter, which said they learned “that an operation has commenced in more than one location” where the hospital is shredding or disposing of official documents that “may be material to our litigation.”

“Earl’s paralegal got a call from an employee saying there was an effort under way by some in the administration to destroy some documents in financial services,” Barton said. “We started to make some calls to figure out what … was going on.”

Barton said he spoke with an employee who had been working in the financial services department for more than 30 years, who told him he had never before seen such activity until today.
