RELEASE:

Cummings, Conyers, and Thompson Issue Statement Renewing Call for Police Reform Hearings

Jan 6, 2015 Press Release

Washington, D.C.—Today, Reps. Elijah E. Cummings, John Conyers Jr., and Bennie G. Thompson, Ranking Members of the House Committees on Oversight and Government Reform, the Judiciary, and Homeland Security, issued a joint statement reiterating their request for a series of in-depth hearings into the issues raised by the deaths of Eric Garner, Michael Brown, and others, as well as the role Congress can play in implementing broader criminal justice reform.

“As we begin the 114th Congress and prepare to address the priorities of the American people, we renew our call for the House of Representatives to hold a series of hearings into recent cases in which African Americans have been killed by police. This is a transformative moment for our country, and we believe Congress has a critical role to play in helping to restore trust in the criminal justice system, ensuring that every American is treated equally before the law, and exercising oversight of the funding and resources that the Federal government allocates to local jurisdictions.”
