Bryant, 6 other governors want EPA emissions proposal axed

Seven governors are asking President Barack Obama to block a proposed Environmental Protection Agency rule that would effectively shutter coal-fired power plants and prevent construction of new ones.

The EPA wants to raise the performance standard for new coal, oil and natural gas electric generating plants, decreasing how much greenhouse gas they could emit.

The proposed regulations are in response to complaints from states in the Northeast that threatened to sue the EPA in April unless the agency changed its rules. Those officials say emissions from coal plants in the Midwest drifts eastward, polluting the air in their states.
