Thompson – I voted against the farm bill for the 50,000 in Miss. on food stamps

Today, for the first time in 20 years, I voted against the Farm Bill. Today’s Farm Bill called for a horrendous $20 billion in cuts to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). With more than 50,000 households in Mississippi’s Second Congressional District benefiting from SNAP, I could not justify voting for this piece of legislation. We should not deprive over 200,000 school children across the country access to free school meals. We should not deny millions of Americans this essential lifeline.

Once again, House Republicans have confirmed their commitment to balancing the budget on the backs of children, seniors and the most vulnerable citizens of this country. I will not back legislation that takes food from the mouths of our families and eliminates jobs from our districts. That is why I voted NO to H.R. 1947!
