NUNNELEE STATEMENT ON THE FARM BILL
The House of Representatives today voted down H.R. 1947, the Federal Agriculture Reform and Risk Management Act of 2013. After casting his vote in support of the legislation, Congressman Alan Nunnelee (R-Miss.) released a statement:
“The Democrats walked away from a bipartisan compromise because they refused to support reforming the out of control food stamp program. They want government to grow and make as many people as possible dependent on it. As long as we have an entire political party in Washington dedicated to the failed status quo, compromise legislation like this farm bill will be tough to pass.”
H.R. 1947 would have produced over $40 billion in mandatory spending savings through eliminating and consolidating outdated programs, ending direct payments to farmers, and reforming the food stamp program for the first time since 1996. Food stamp reforms included $20.5 billion in savings by closing loopholes the Obama Administration has used to double participation in the program over the past five years and work requirements for able-bodied recipients. The legislation also included reforms to rein in the EPA.
H.R. 1947 failed 195-234 with only 24 Democrats voting in support.
Congressman Alan Nunnelee represents Mississippi’s First Congressional District. He serves on the House Appropriations Committee and the House Budget Committee. This is his second term.
