Fishing industry tax exemption passes House
Two Coast lawmakers got an amendment passed in the state House that would exempt some fishing, oystering and shrimping businesses from paying sales tax on electricity and fuel.
Rep. David Baria, D-Bay St. Louis, and Rep. Randall Patterson, D-Biloxi, offered an amendment to House Bill 844 to remove the 1.5 percent tax. The bill has passed the House and awaits Senate approval. It has been assigned to the Senate Finance Committee.
The measure is designed to help the industry continue to recover from Hurricane Katrina and also the BP oil spill of 2010.
