Storm recovery in Hub City hampered by continued rain
About 80 people were injured in the 75-mile path of a tornado through the Pine Belt, and high winds destroyed or damaged 570 homes and apartments, closed 50 roads, mangled vehicles and damaged seven buildings on the University of Southern Mississippi campus.
“If all we have to do is clean up this mess, that will be wonderful,” said Robert Latham, director of the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency, noting no lives were lost in the storm.
An eastward-moving tornado ripped through Lamar, Forrest and Marion counties before nightfall Sunday, downing power lines and trees, damaging buildings, and mangling traffic signs and lights at intersections.
