Team Obama knows the trajectory, for both economy and re-election, is bad. They have spent like drunken liberals this summer, mostly attacking Mitt Romney with mostly made up stuff, only to pull roughly even in the polls. “Tied” after blowing $130 million, before Romney’s veep pick, and before Romney 2012 has really taken any shots at Obama’s record, is not where an incumbent wants to be.
To quote Jeremiah Wright, with a nod to Chick-fil-A, the chickens are coming home to roost. Obama’s economy stinks. The recovery, if you could tell there was one, has stalled again, and so have Obama’s repeated attempts to change the subject. Actually, Obama’s “you didn’t build that” insult of small businesses sort of changed the subject, by underscoring Obama’s contempt for the private sector.
Oops. The growing anxiety at Obama central resulted in the President himself taking to the airwaves during the Olympics (something which offended my wife and a couple mostly apolitical friends to no end). In the Olympics ad, Obama, with that self-righteous narcissism that the media translate as “likeability,” reprises the “Blame Bush/Romney’s Rich” theme. With a straight face, Obama touts higher taxes on those $250,000-per-year “millionaires and billionaires” to pay off our deficit as the cure for what ails us. This is “vision”?
Obama’s message becomes ever more incoherent as he searches for something that will “stick.” His slogan, or the latest one, is “Forward,” even as Team Obama has begged Bill Clinton to keynote the Democratic National Convention. Yes, Obama has channeled Lincoln, LBJ, both Roosevelts, Reagan, and Truman, finally to settle on Bubba, the only Democrat to be re-elected since FDR.
So we go Forward by looking back. Of course, Bubba’s record compared to Obama’s looks pretty good. But Clinton’s re-electable record, including welfare reform that Obama just gutted by executive order, actually occurred in large part because Clinton had to work with a Republican Congress. Oops.
