Under intense pressure from the Mississippi Tea Party and other freedom loving and free market groups including the MS Center for Public Policy, the Clarion Ledger reports this morning that Mike Chaney has capitulated (at least until after the election) and is not moving forward with creating a health insurance exchange. The full article is at: http://www.clarionledger.com/article/20120713/NEWS/207130335/Insurance-exchange-tabled
Before we celebrate, let’s make sure the article is accurate. The MSTP understood Chaney to said Thursday that he would not implement the exchange if Obama is reelected. However, in the meantime, he was understood to say that he would continue to work on it and spend your tax dollars to create it as though he will implement it. Of course, that doesn’t make sense (if Romney is elected there won’t be a need for an exchange) but still, as Chaney scrambled to deal with the heat he has gotten over the last two days, that is the position we and several others thought he took.
In any event, the MSTP never heard him say he is not moving forward with creating a state-run exchange. Expect a clarifying press release out of the Insurance Department today. If not, the MSTP will ask Chaney to confirm the Clarion Ledger report.
Even if the newspaper story is inaccurate, it is at least a very good sign that your Mississippi Tea Party is making progress. For that tea party patriots should be encouraged and hopeful.
