Tighter control of travel costs needed
Earlier this year, Gov. Bobby Jindal of Louisiana issued an executive moratorium on all non-essential travel by state employees. Gov. Phil Bryant of Mississippi should consider similar action if public employees and officials in the Magnolia State cannot curb their enthusiasm for extravagant travel at taxpayer expense.
There are certainly circumstances that justify leaving the state on official business.
But as the Sun Herald’s political editor Geoff Pender detailed recently, there is an entitlement attitude in some sectors of state government that needs adjusting.
