Committee approves Nunnelee amendment to prevent taxpayer funded abortions

By: Magnolia Tribune - June 21, 2012

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, during markup of the Financial Services and General Government Appropriations bill, the House Appropriations Committee approved an amendment offered by Rep. Alan Nunnelee (R-Miss.). The amendment expands an existing prohibition that restricts the Federal Employees Health Benefits program from providing coverage for abortions to include multi-state health insurance programs administered by the federal government under ObamaCare.

“This committee has had a long history of bipartisan agreement of recognizing that taxpayers should not be asked to pay for elective abortions, nor should the taxpayers be paying for health plans that are administering elective abortions,” Nunnelee stated in his opening remarks.

At the close of debate over the amendment, Nunnelee summed up his position by saying, “This amendment simply says that we will not allow dollars, taken by force from the paychecks of hardworking taxpayers, and have those dollars be used to fund administrative expenses for plans that pay for abortions.” The amendment passed, 28 to 20.

Congressman Alan Nunnelee represents Mississippi’s First Congressional District and serves on the House Appropriations Committee. This is his first term.
