Supplemental pay for boss of MDA is a really bad idea

To secure the services of the best coaches money can buy, universities permit boosters to bolster athletic department salaries. That is apparently what Gov. Phil Bryant wants to do with the salary of the next executive director of the Mississippi Development Authority.

It is a terrible idea that unfortunately is well on its way to passage in the Mississippi Legislature.

As introduced by Rep. Mac Huddleston, R-Pontotoc, the legislation would use public money to pay the MDA director up to 150 percent of the governor’s salary, which would give the MDA boss a base salary of approximately $185,000. But that amount could be augmented by contributions from companies or federal grants or other sources.
