PERS under fire

LAUREL — A packed room of current and retired state employees filled the Jones County Courthouse in Laurel on Tuesday night to get information on PERS — Public Employees Retirement System.

District-66 Rep. Cecil Brown and former PERS board member Sam Valentine explained what the current state of their retirement plan is in and encouraged the audience to question their legislators on where they stand on the PERS.

Brown said in the past three months Governor Haley Barbour had appointed a board to study PERS and make recommendations on ways to change it. The committee was approved by the Senate but shot down in the House of Representatives. Brown said the reason the House voted against it was because there was already a committee in place to make the recommendations on PERS, the PERS Board.
