DuPree, Luckett question Medicaid sign-up process
OXFORD, Miss. — Two Democrats running for Mississippi governor said during a debate that the state should reconsider the practice of making Medicaid recipients go to a state office once a year to re-enroll in the health program for the needy.
Hattiesburg Mayor Johnny DuPree said he believes the “face-to-face” enrollment process is more expensive for the state because the Division of Medicaid had to hire more employees to handle it. Under the old process, people on Medicaid could re-enroll by mail.
“I’m not naive. I know there are some people that are on Medicaid that are probably taking the system. I believe that,” DuPree said Wednesday night. “But the vast majority of people are people who need it.”
