Speaker McCoy’s retirement deflates GOP attack plan

Richard Nixon memorably told the press it wouldn’t have him “to kick around anymore” after losing his bid for the California governorship in the 1960s. Billy McCoy could use a similar line against Mississippi Republicans who’ve feasted on him as their political punching bag.

His decision not to seek reelection to the House let the air out of the GOP’s attack strategy to grab control of both legislative chambers and, at least in one case, to nullify statewide GOP candidate Tate Reeves’ campaign pitch.

A GOP website “FireMcCoy. com,” has been dedicated to ousting targeted Democrats believed vulnerable and whose defeat would scuttle McCoy’s reelection as speaker. Too bad, they will have to find a new site name.
