Miss. chief justice’s pay lowest in U.S.
The state’s 150 judges would get pay raises up to 38 percent under a bill making its way through the Legislature, though some lawmakers say a salary hike for any government employees in the midst of a fiscal crisis sends the wrong message.
“At this point in time I don’t think Mississippians can stomach a pay increase of any kind for any form of government throughout the state,” said House Fees and Salaries of Public Officers Vice Chairman Chuck Espy, D-Clarksdale.
The salary increases would total about $4.7 million and would be paid for by filing fee increases.
