State budget overhaul likely to die in House
Lt. Gov. Phil Bryant, a Republican who is mounting a campaign for governor, has led the push for a new budgeting system the past two years. He has included the issue in his platform for higher office.
But key lawmakers in the House, where similar legislation failed to gain traction last year, continue to show signs of hesitation.
“There are a few issues we have a difference of opinion on,” said House Appropriations Chair Johnny Stringer, D-Montrose.
The state Senate is expected to approve Senate Bill 2301.
Stringer said he is still studying the budget overhaul plan but, speaking to a room of business leaders last week, he did not appear optimistic about its chances of making it through the House.
