New mascot at Ole Miss likely to make debut in ’11
“The real answer is it will be when we know we’ve got it right,” said Michael Thompson, University of Mississippi senior associate athletic director for communications and marketing. “It has to be perfect the first time.”
That likely will be sometime in 2011, he said, noting the new mascot will be a student in a bear costume and named “Rebel.”
A student-led mascot selection committee made the recommendation to leaders Wednesday night after reviewing the latest poll of Ole Miss students, faculty, staff, alumni and season ticket holders.
“The university has accepted the students’ mascot recommendation, and we have turned this matter over to Athletics to bring the new mascot to life,” said Chancellor Dan Jones in a statement.
