The state Senate Judiciary A Committee will host Illegal Immigration Reform hearings on September 28 and 29, at the Capitol to gather data from law enforcement officials and state leaders on whether Mississippi needs an immigration bill geared toward enhanced enforcement of existing federal laws.
Committee members will also discuss the economic impact of illegal immigration on state resources while reviewing provisions of a similar measure passed earlier in the year by Arizona in part to combat what they say is a drain on state revenues.
The first hearing will be at 10 a.m., Tuesday, September 28, in Room 216. The next hearing will be 9 a.m. on Wednesday, September 29, in Room 216.
“It is essential for lawmakers and policy makers in Mississippi to understand fully the impact that illegal immigrants have on our educational, law enforcement and health care budgets. The purpose of these hearings is to offer an opportunity for supporters and detractors of the Arizona-style immigration law that will be taken up in next year’s legislative session to offer the Judiciary A Committee their thoughts and opinions on whether we need such a bill in Mississippi,” said District 41 Senator Joey Fillingane, Chairman of the Judiciary A Committee. “The Senate Judiciary A Committee will take a fair and balanced approach towards this issue and hope to gain a better understanding of the problems and benefits associated with illegal immigrants in our state.”
