Childers tills farm issues, draws flak
U.S. Rep. Travis Childers, D-Miss., who earlier this week talked education in DeSoto County, plowed into soil and water issues Thursday, vowing to support provisions of the 2012 Farm Bill aiding family operations.
“I don’t want them to become extinct in this tough economy,” said Childers. “We can’t forget that agriculture is still Mississippi’s No. 1 industry, and remains big in DeSoto County.”
He noted that a tax provision with “reasonable exemptions” benefiting family farmers cleared the House but remains stalled in the Senate, and he hopes for action soon.
Childers, who holds a seat on the House Agriculture Committee, said he will try to steer the panel to North Mississippi for Farm Bill hearings in 2011.
