Sierra Club – PSC Kemper plant reversal stabs ratepayers in the back

By: Magnolia Tribune - May 27, 2010

From Better Mississippi Report:

JACKSON, Miss. (Wednesday, May 26, 2010) – The director of the Mississippi Sierra Club said today that the state Public Service Commission shifted the risk of a planned coal-burning power plant from Mississippi Power Co. to the utility’s ratepayers.

Louie Miller criticized the PSC for reversing a unanimous, 1-month-old decision that would have required Mississippi Power Co. to finance the power plant in Kemper County. That decision was reversed today by a 2-1 vote, with Commissioners Leonard Bentz and Lynn Posey voting in favor.

“Commissioners Bentz and Posey flip-flopped, and stabbed the ratepayers in the back,” Miller said. “Now, customers of Mississippi Power likely will see their electric bills increase to pay for a coal-burning plant that no one including the PSC can prove is absolutely needed.
