Desoto County a major player in Childers Nunnelee race

The eyes of the nation are on the 2010 First Congressional District race and some see the matchup between conservative Democrat Travis Childers and conservative Republican Alan Nunnelee as a litmus test on the pace of the national recovery and the early months of the Obama Administration.

“The whole country will be watching the First District,” said Dr. Marty Wiseman, director of the John C. Stennis Institute of Government at Mississippi State University. “They’re going to see if the voters will knock off a Blue Dog Democrat like Travis Childers.”

Wiseman said Nunnelee, the Republican candidate from Tupelo, resonates with voters in the First District.

“Nunnelee is the type of evangelical conservative who fits well in DeSoto County,” Wiseman said. “He understands the conservative Southern Baptist kind of thinking.”

Wiseman called DeSoto County and Rankin County two of the most Republican counties in the state.
