Gene Taylor against insurance industry’s anti-trust exemption
Mississippi Rep. Gene Taylor, a Bay St. Louis Democrat long critical of property insurers, has hopped on the bandwagon of those urging a crackdown on the health insurance industry.
Last week, he joined 14 other Democrats in urging House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., to pursue repeal of the industry’s federal anti-trust exemption as part of a broader health system overhaul and give the Federal Trade Commission enforcement power.
The exemption dates back to 1945, and it was only meant to be temporary, the lawmakers wrote in a Thursday letter. While the industry says it is still covered by state anti-trust laws, “the truth is many states have limited resources to investigate and go after anti-trust violations,” they wrote.
