Chandler – Flowers won’t run for Congress

State Sen. Merle Flowers said today he will not enter a 2010 congressional race in north Mississippi’s 1st District.

Flowers, a Republican from Southaven, announced his decision on the social networking site Facebook this morning.

“For the peace and purity of the Republican Party, I will not be a candidate for Congress in 2010,” he wrote. “Thanks to everyone for your encouragement. My family and I are truly blessed to have so many good folks supporting us. We appreciate y’all.”

His decision means that Republicans could avoid another divisive primary race in their attempts to oust first-term Democratic Rep. Travis Childers. Senate Appropriations Committee Chairman Alan Nunnelee, R-Tupelo, has also been eyeing the position.
