Lawyer says Gulfport broke open meeting laws
The City Council illegally excluded the public from a discussion of agreements that obligate taxpayers to fund a municipal center and potentially provide utilities for a proposed subdivision, said Gulfport attorney Henry Laird, an expert on the state’s open meeting laws.
Guided by City Attorney Jeff Bruni, the council went into executive session Wednesday evening to discuss annexing 2.5 acres north of Gulfport and Biloxi.
State open meeting laws allow closed meetings for prospective litigation, including annexation. But during the meeting, council President Ella Holmes-Hines said members also discussed agreements with Pitcher Point Investments to develop more than 776.4 acres within the annexed area.
