Contraband tobacco investigation continues from State Auditor Stacey Pickering’s office

By: Magnolia Tribune - May 29, 2009

Contraband tobacco investigation continues

This week a search warrant was served at the globe distribution warehouse in Tupelo.

Agents from the F.B.I., A.T.F., the State Tax Commission, and the State Auditor’s office seized documents from the building, but they wouldn’t say what was taken.

This latest search warrant was part of the investigation into $20 million worth of cigarettes found in a Mississippi warehouse last month.

Whoever smuggled the smokes into the state didn’t pay the state tax, estimated at $1.5 million.

“Similar to the actions taken last week by the federal agencies of which they seized records and computer hard drives and other bits of information that could be gleaned, I would suspect you would see similar things come out of this exercise,” said Auditor Stacey Pickering.
