YP Flashback – Hood takes undue credit for Katrina settlements

Mississippi Business Journal Q&A With Jim Hood (May 11-17, 2009):

MBJ – What is the status on lawsuits related to Hurricane Katrina?

Hood – In August 2008, our office announced the settlement of the state’s breach of contract suit against State Farm, which was filed after State Farm refused to comply with a January 2007 Hinds County Chancery Court settlement. Due to the state’s suit against several insurance companies, State Farm paid an additional $74 million and Nationwide Insurance Co. has paid an additional $40 million to Coast policy holders.

Funny, this was what Insurance Commissioner Mike Chaney said about Hood taking credit for this back in 2008, “I think he’s crazy to call a press conference on a lawsuit claiming credit for something he didn’t do.”

But to give him credit, he did parse his words like an attorney would in this interview. Jim Hood says his office “announced the settlement” which is true, they did “announce” it. And he said it was the “state’s suit,” not that he had anything to do with it. He didn’t actually claim credit for it this week, he was just answering the question and if the reader assumed Hood had anything to do with it, well, that’s the reader’s fault.

Here is a flashback to David Rossmiller’s post from August 7, 2008 where he mentions other things Jim Hood might take credit for, but why he certainly should not take credit for this.

Also in the MBJ Q&A Hood says he will consider running for Governor after the following “missions are accomplished”: rescue children from sexual molestation, fighting cyber crimes, curbing the spread of counterfeit goods and products, protecting our elderly citizines, fighting to ensure refunds from Entergy.
