Lafayette coroner investigated
Lafayette County Coroner Lonnie Weaver is under investigation by the Mississippi Coroners and Medical Examiners Association, an organization he led until his resignation last week.
Weaver has been the county’s coroner for 20 years and is also a sergeant with the Oxford Police Department. He served as president of the association for three years.
“The investigation is about his time as president of the association,” said Lowndes County Coroner Greg Merchant, who succeeded Weaver at MC-MEA and did not disclose the nature of the investigation.
“There’s no question of his performance as Lafayette County coroner.”
The MC-MEA, according to its Web site, is “a not-for-profit organization whose mission is to support the coroners of the Magnolia State through education and training, providing resources to assist in death investigations, developing strategies to prevent loss of life, and rendering support to each county coroner when requested to aid in the timely resolution of death investigations.”
Merchant spoke to the Daily Journal from Jackson, where he was attending a MC-MEA-sponsored seminar on handling mass casualties.
An association peer committee is conducting the investigation and should report its findings later this month.
Weaver cited family problems as the reason for his resignation.
