Council President Leslie Burl McLemore’s departure from city government likely signals a potential shift in power on the council.
After almost a decade on the Jackson City Council, McLemore said Friday that he will not seek re-election.
Many key votes now are split 4 to 3 on the council, with McLemore often in the majority and opposing Mayor Frank Melton. McLemore is the second person in the majority that is not seeking re-election; Ward 6 Councilman Marshand Crisler is running for mayor.
The current council’s term expires in July.
