Northeast Mississippi lawmakers consider education a top priority for the 2009 legislative session, which begins in January.
“We have no future if we do not educate our children so that they can compete in the nation and the world,” said Rep. Margaret Ellis Rogers, D-New Albany.
Rogers made her comments in response to a questionnaire submitted to legislators who attended a recent meeting of the Commission on the Future of Northeast Mississippi in Tupelo.
Rep. Steve Holland, D-Plantersville, agreed that education is a top priority, but he also believes the state should work with Tupelo and Lee County to better develop Elvis Presley’s birthplace as a tourist destination.
He said the birthplace park, located in East Tupelo, could provide a bigger boon for the state.
