Jackson seeks retrial delay

By: Magnolia Tribune - October 25, 2008

The Clarion-Ledger, 10/24/8

The city of Jackson is seeking to delay the federal retrial next month of a sexual harassment lawsuit filed by a female Jackson firefighter and three former firefighters against the city and male supervisors.

One reason the city cites in a motion requesting a postponement until January or February is that its lead attorney in the case is a new part-time special circuit judge.

On Oct. 10, Assistant City Attorney Pieter Teeuwissen was sworn in as a special judge to handle criminal cases in Hinds County.

Teeuwissen said he is scheduled to preside over criminal hearings during the time the trial is set.

“He is familiar with the intricate claims and details in this matter and due to the complexity of this case; a substitution of lead counsel is not feasible,” the motion states.
