Absentee voting for the November election may be delayed if a ballot dispute in a U.S. Senate race isn’t resolved soon, election officials said Wednesday.
The Mississippi Supreme Court is considering the legality of a ballot that puts the race between Sen. Roger Wicker, a Republican, and former Gov. Ronnie Musgrove, a Democrat, near the bottom. Justices on Wednesday listened to arguments at a hearing that lasted an hour and a half. They gave no indication of when they’ll issue a ruling.
Absentee balloting is scheduled to begin Monday. In Hinds County, where hundreds of residents voted absentee in the last presidential election, the ballots are ready, but because of the legal wrangling officials don’t know if they’re legal.
Circuit Clerk Barbara Dunn said, “It’s just hectic because people are calling, wanting to come in and vote. They may come to the courthouse to vote, and we won’t have any ballot.”
