Sen. Merle Flowers: Drill Here, Drill Now, Pay Less
The Unites States has become almost completely dependent upon foreign oil
production. As a result, Americans are now paying over $4 per gallon at
the gas pumps. This situation is outrageous, but what is even more
outrageous is that the Democrat led Congress still does not even remotely
have a plan that will offer any viable long term, or even short term,
solution to the energy crisis in America.
I think the solution is
pretty simple: Drill Here. Drill Now. Pay Less.
Congress adjourned
last week for a five-week recess, without voting on any domestic oil
production bills. Be on the lookout for members of Congress to be riding
around in August in their taxpayer funded automobiles filled with $4
gasoline that was purchased with your tax dollars. All the while, you and
I continue to struggle to find a way to make ends meet and pay bills.
This energy crisis is hitting families hard, and it was totally
unnecessary.
Don’t just take my word for it; just ask any fellow
Mississippian what they think about $4 gas. Our people work too hard for
their money to have it squandered away at the gas pump because an
ineffective, Democrat controlled, U.S. Congress refuses to allow a vote on
domestic oil production.
I met last week with former Speaker of the
House Newt Gingrich’s organization, American Solutions for Winning the
Future, about the gas price crisis. This organization’s core mission is
to become the leading grassroots movement to recruit, educate, and empower
citizen activists and elected officials to develop solutions to transform
all levels of government.
I have always admired Speaker Gingrich’s
bold initiatives, such as the Contract with America, that helped usher in
a new progressive leadership team in the U.S. House in 1994. His new
venture, American Solutions, was founded in September 2007 and is growing
like wildfire in popularity because it offers straight talk, real change,
and practical ideas of how to address issues our country is facing.

has plenty of oil underneath our soil. We do not need any foreign country
