At the end of the 2008 regular session, first-year Republican Lt. Gov. Phil Bryant talked about the immense challenges of his new office.
“People keep asking me if I enjoyed it,” Bryant said at the time. “I said, ‘I’m not sure it was meant to be enjoyed.’
“It is the greatest challenge of my life. There is no job that trains you to be lieutenant governor – trains you for the challenges you meet every day.”
As the presiding officer of the Senate, Bryant must deal every day with that chamber’s 52 members and their egos – as well as with the House leadership and with Gov. Haley Barbour, with whom Byrant thus far has been linked at the political hip.
If the 2008 regular session was a challenge, it was mild compared to what Bryant has been facing during the ongoing special session.
