At a time when the state budget is tight and getting tighter, Mississippi lawmakers will have to come back to the Capitol to finish legislative business in a special session.
What a waste.
When the 2008 regular session of the Legislature began, the legislative leadership was praised by this newspaper and others for deciding to trim the usual 125-day session to 103 days to save money.
Now, because legislators couldn’t find agreement on how to fund the deficit-laden Medicaid program, it will be necessary for Gov. Haley Barbour to call them back into special session before July 1.
Special sessions are expensive. The first day of a special session costs $59,895 and it costs .$39,420 for each subsequent day, without travel expenses.
