Medicaid: Extension or special session?

Legislators took no action Tuesday to revive the Medicaid budget, which died at midnight Monday when the House and Senate negotiators could not reach a compromise.

But both sides said they were working behind the scenes to see what could be done about funding for the Division of Medicaid, which provides health care coverage for about 600,000 elderly, disabled and poor pregnant women and children.

At this point, the only solution for legislators is to extend the session by a two-thirds vote or to come back in special session.

On Monday night, Senate leaders were urging the House to extend the session. Any effort to extend the session must originate in the House.
