Small Business Endorses Davis in House Special Election

The National Federation of Independent Business, the nation’s leading small business association, today announced that it has endorsed Greg Davis in the special election to replace Sen. Roger Wicker as U.S. Representative in Mississippi’s 1st Congressional District.

The endorsement comes from NFIB’s Save America’s Free Enterprise (SAFE) Trust, the organization’s political action committee, and is based on responses to a candidate questionnaire, prior voting records and personal interviews to evaluate the candidates’ views on legislative issues affecting small business.

“Greg Davis is the proven small business candidate in this race,” said Lisa Goeas, NFIB’s vice president, political. “Throughout his 17 years of public service, Davis has continually fought on behalf of small business owners. Over the course of his seven years in the Mississippi Legislature, Davis earned an 82 percent lifetime voting record on key state NFIB issues.”

Davis’ opponent, Travis Childers, did not return NFIB’s Congressional Candidate Questionnaire. In a survey of NFIB members in the 1st District, 88 percent of respondents supported Davis and 12 percent preferred Childers.

Goeas also noted that since he was elected mayor in 1997, Davis helped Southaven grow to become a major economic center in northern Mississippi through economic development practices and fiscal restraint. Davis enacted the first municipal tax rebate in the history of Mississippi. In addition, she said, he is a strong proponent of legal and regulatory reform.

The endorsement puts the considerable grassroots support of the district’s small businesses behind the Davis campaign. Small business owners and their employees vote in high numbers and are known for actively recruiting friends, family members and acquaintances to go to the polls. NFIB will encourage its members to help turn out the influential small business voting bloc on Election Day. According to NFIB polling data, small business owners and their employees make up 43 percent of registered voters in America.
