Davis, Childers to face off in 1st District

By: Magnolia Tribune - April 2, 2008

The Clarion-Ledger, 4/2/8

North Mississippi voters on Tuesday determined who will be in the 1st Congressional District showdown in November, and political experts said a Democrat has a decent shot at winning the seat held by a Republican the last 14 years.

Southaven Mayor Greg Davis, a Republican, will face Prentiss County Chancery Clerk Travis Childers, a Democrat, in the general election.

On Tuesday, Davis beat former Tupelo Mayor Glenn McCullough Jr. in the GOP runoff. Childers defeated state Rep. Steve Holland in the Democratic runoff.

The winner will replace Roger Wicker, a Republican appointed to replace retired Sen. Trent Lott. Wicker must defeat former Gov. Ronnie Musgrove, a Democrat, in November in order to keep the seat.
