Greg Davis, the mayor of one of the fastest-growing towns in Mississippi, is now one step closer to Congress after defeating former Tennessee Valley Authority chairman Glenn McCullough in the Republican runoff to determine a successor for former Rep. (and now Sen.) Roger Wicker’s First District seat.
With all precincts reporting, Davis narrowly defeated McCullough 51 to 49 percent. McCullough finished in first place in the first round of balloting last month, but finished short of the 50 percent necessary to avoid a runoff.
Davis aggressively attacked McCullough in the campaign’s final week, accusing him of being soft on immigration and scrutinizing his record as head of the TVA.
Davis will be facing Prentiss County Chancery Clerk Travis Childers (D) in the November general election. Childers handily defeated state Rep. Steve Holland, 57 to 43 percent, in the Democratic runoff. Childers, who campaigned as a conservative Democrat, actually received more overall votes than Davis, giving Democrats optimism that they can contest this seat in November.
But first, there will be a special election on April 22 where the same candidates will be again on the ballot vying to fill the remainder of Wicker’s unexpired term. If no candidate wins 50 percent of the vote, the top two finishers will face off on May 13 in a runoff.
