1st DISTRICT – In the 1st Congressional District – an open seat that was vacated when former U.S. Rep. Roger Wicker, R-Tupelo, was appointed to serve the unexpired term of former U.S. Sen. Trent Lott when Lott retired – state Rep. Steve Holland of Plantersville is the best choice in the April 1 Democratic second primary runoff based on his cumulative legislative experience and based on his service as a longtime aide to the late legendary former U.S. Rep. Jamie Whitten.
Holland faces a second primary showdown with Prentiss County Chancery Clerk Travis Childers of Booneville. Childers led the ticket in the March 11 primary.
In the 1st District’s Republican primary, former Tupelo mayor and former Tennessee Valley Authority chairman Glenn McCullough Jr. of Tupelo possesses the best overall qualifications among the Republican contenders to represent the diverse interests of the district on Capitol Hill.
McCullough, who led the ticket in the March 11 primary, faces a second primary runoff with Southaven Mayor Greg Davis.
The Democratic and Republican nominees will meet independent Wally Pang and Green Party candidate John M. Wages Jr. in the November general election.
3rd DISTRICT – In the 3rd Congressional District Republican second primary runoff, former state Sen. Charlie Ross of Brandon remains the most experienced legislator and the candidate who offers the very credible ability to hit the ground running in representing the 3rd District’s interests.
Ross served in Desert Storm and understands perhaps better than any Republican candidate in the 3rd District race the challenges the nation faces in the war on terrorism in Iraq and Afghanistan. That experience uniquely qualifies him to carry on legendary U.S. Rep. G.V. “Sonny” Montgomery’s service to America’s veterans, Guardsmen and Reservists.
Gregg Harper of Pearl, the longtime Rankin County GOP chairman, has run a clean, issues-oriented campaign that has made the 3rd District GOP race highly competitive. As we see it, Harper’s absence of legislative experience is his only negative in that race.
